Music Lyrics

There is a business in Vermont known as the Vermont Country Store. The store was founded by Vrest and Ellen Orton in 1946 in Weston, Vermont. The family began their business by printing a catalog in their garage with 12 pages and 36 items, and mailed them to their Christmas card list of about 1,000 people, in October, 1945. Vrest Orton learned the business by working in his grandfather’s store before that. The small town of Weston had only a single map of vermont in its population of about 475 at the time and people would travel dirt roads to get there. The population is about 600 today. The Saturday Evening Post published an article about the store in 1952 and it was a full length article called, “The Happy Storekeeper of the Green Mountains”. This helped the business of the store tremendously.

Vermont Country Store was based on the family’s principles of finding and selling useful things ,to the farm families in Northern Vermont whom believe in vermont american, that were hard for the people to find. The store’s motto became, “We sell products that don’t come back, to people who do”. The store offered a money back guarantee and tried to not oversell their products (over price them). The store had a mail order business and built a trust with their customers. In the Early 1970's a vermont map was created when the store experienced the brunt of the energy crisis in the store as far as their tourist trade went, but their catalog business was great. Because of this they learned to stock their storeroom with more merchandise for their mail order business so they could be ready to ship an order the next day after receiving it.

The store today is thriving and has grown in popularity, their warehouse has expanded and they have hired on more employees. They have a website at www.VermontCountryStore.com and business is thriving. The family has learned how to control their growing pace so they can keep their reputation and not try to grow too fast. They want to keep their customers satisfied and want them to return for other purchases.

Lyman Orton is in control the company and it now creates vermont teddy and he has th help of his three sons, Cabot, Gardner, and Eliot. They are learning the process of the business and they also serve on the Board of Directors. The family has created The Orton Family Foundation which helps citizens and local governments of Vermont, and other parts of the country, better shape the futures of their towns.
