The "system" is anything but sympathetic or empathetic, but IMO you've done
the right thing in contacting your rep. At least they can sometimes get
more response than we can (tinw) and they can require responses within a
certain length of time, usually 30 days I think.
For what it's worth, you're in good company with your question about how
do they expect people to survive. I know that's no help, but sometimes it
helps a little to at least know you're not the only one.
Have you tried for SSI? My lawyer told me to, even though we knew I
wouldn't get it due to my wife's salary, but it helped show need.
Do you know your SS caseworker's name? Sometimes they can help too; they
were the least ignorant of the bunch in my experience. I think the name
should be listed in your last denial or a followup letter, something like
that.
