ANNOUNCEMENT! Vermont is one of the New England states located in the northeastern part of the United States. The state covers an area of 9,250 square miles and it is the 43rd in size in area. The population of Vermont is around 608,900, and growing. It is the second least populated state in the U. S. And is second only to Wyoming. The Green Mountains and Lake Champlain are the highlights of the state. Vermont is surrounded by Quebec, Canada on the north, Massachusetts, on the south, New Hampshire on the east, and New York on the west side. The Native Americans originally inhabited Vermont, until it was claimed by the French. The tribes who lived there were the Abenaki and the Iroquois. The land later became the property of Britain after the French and Indian War. New Hampshire and New York tried fought for control of the area for years but the people in this area finally declared their independence and became a state. Vermont became the 14th state in the United States after a fourteen year period of being the independent Vermont Republic. Lake Champlain is the sixth largest body of water in the United States. The state capital is Montpelier but the largest city in the state is Burlington. The Connecticut river is actually part of New Hampshire but it marks the eastern border of Vermont. Lake Champlain is the major lake in the state. Other physical regions in the state are the Northeastern Highlands, the Green Mountains, the Taconic Mountains, the Champlain Lowlands, the Valley of Vermont and the Vermont Piedmont. About 77 % of the state is forest land. The temperatures in Vermont consists of warm, humid summers and very cold winters. Vermont is the leading producer of maple syrup in Burlington. The state has an annual snowfall of 60 to 100 inches depending on the elevations. Vermont has some of the best cross country ski areas of all of the U. S. States. The sugar maple trees show a beautiful colorful foliage in the fall and the hillsides are spectacular. The trees have anywhere from gold to red to yellow to orange foliage depending on the soil and climate conditions. There are summer camps in Vermont and this adds to the tourist attractions. Other attractions to the state are trout fishing, lake fishing, and ice fishing. There is also hiking on the Long Trail. The winters in Vermont provides many ski resorts and people come from all over the world to try out the slopes. The ski resorts available are Mad River Glen, Stowe, Killington Ski resort, Sugarbrush, Stratton, Jay Peak, Okemo, Suicide Six, Mount Snow, and Bromley. Vermont Country Store |
